How to Make a GIF Face Swap: Step-by-Step
Gijela · Last updated:
You need two files and four steps. This guide follows the real flow on the site, including the file limits, the checkout step and what to do when a swap fails.
What you need before you start
The first file is the target GIF: the animation you want to edit. It must be a GIF, no larger than 20 MB, no more than 720×720, no longer than 10 seconds and no more than 150 frames. It should contain at least two frames and a clearly visible face.
The second file is the face photo: JPG, PNG or WebP, no larger than 5 MB, with one person facing the camera. A sharp photo with even light and no sunglasses works best. You also need a receipt email for checkout, and you should be ready to confirm that you own the files or have permission to use them.
Step 1: Upload the target GIF and the face photo
Open the generator on the homepage. In the “Target GIF” box, choose the animation from your device. The page parses the file before uploading, so an invalid, oversized or single-frame GIF is rejected immediately with a clear message instead of wasting a swap.
In the “Face photo” box, choose the photo you want to use. The preview shows what will be sent. Check the limits: a face that is small, blurry or turned away is more likely to fail or produce a soft result. If the page says the GIF is too large, too long or has too many frames, choose a shorter loop or a smaller resolution.
Step 2: Confirm you have permission
Tick the consent box. It confirms that the face photo and the GIF are yours, or that you have permission from everyone identifiable in them, and that you will not use the result to impersonate, deceive or harass anyone.
This is not a formality. A face swap uses someone’s likeness, and permission has to cover the specific place where you plan to share it. If you are making a private joke for a group chat, say so; if you plan to post it publicly, make sure the person agrees to that too. Do not use minors, celebrities or public figures.
Step 3: Pay $1.99 for the swap
If you do not have a swap available, the button changes to a one-time purchase. A single GIF face swap is $1.99; five swaps are $7.99 and ten are $12.99. There is no subscription and no account. Enter the email where you want the payment receipt, then continue to the payment provider.
After payment, the provider returns you to the site and the swap is added to your browser session. You can then start the generation. Keep the receipt email: it is the record of the purchase, and it is separate from the result link, which is temporary.
Step 4: Generate and download the GIF
Press the generate button. The page shows the task status while the model works. Most swaps finish in under a minute; a larger or longer GIF can take a few minutes. You can leave the page and come back, because the task continues in the background.
When the result is ready, preview the animated GIF and download it. The file has no watermark. The result link is temporary and expires after about an hour, so download it as soon as it looks right. If you want a different take, change one of the inputs and generate again; each swap uses one of your purchased swaps.
If the swap fails
The most common failure is “face not detected”. That usually means the source photo is too small, turned away, heavily filtered or not a real face, or the target GIF does not contain a clear face. Try a sharper, front-facing photo and a target with a larger face.
A failed or timed-out swap is returned automatically. You do not need to contact support to get the swap back. If the page says the GIF is too large or too long, reduce the resolution, shorten the loop or lower the frame count. If the result is blurry, the source material is usually the cause: GIF is a compressed format, and a low-resolution target cannot produce a crisp output.
Tips for a cleaner result
Use a target where the face is large and the motion is easy to read. A short reaction loop works better than a busy scene with several people. Keep the clip under ten seconds and the resolution at or below 720×720 so the model can focus on the face.
For the source, use soft, even light and a neutral expression. Avoid sunglasses, masks and heavy beauty filters. If you are choosing between two photos, pick the one with the sharper eyes and the more direct gaze. The model has to match the target’s expression, so a clear, unobstructed face gives it the best chance.
What happens to your files
Your face photo and GIF are sent to the AI provider only to run the swap. We do not store the GIF or photo in our own file storage. We keep a task record and a temporary result URL in our database, and the result URL expires after about an hour.
You can read the full details in the privacy policy and the content policy. If you are making a swap of someone else, get their permission first and keep the result private unless they agree to share it. The report page is available if you see a result that breaks the rules.
